"We have clearly learned from craigslist and backpage.com that victims exist amongst the ads for adult services.  The media at large – and regulators, too – did not start to target these companies until a victim emerged.   Victims certainly existed on these sites prior to the first victim surfacing.  Why didn’t we act sooner?  The lesson learned is that we can’t afford to wait for victims to surface before we act.  Take a look at the adult services AdWords on Google and tell me that the AdWords are not gateways to human trafficking.  AdWords is the mechanism through which the larger, more sophisticated traffickers are driving their business.  Identifying victims becomes even more difficult in the AdWords platform…but just because they are more difficult to identify doesn’t mean that there are any less number of victims!  Arguably, the majority of the perpetrators of human trafficking being identified via Craigslist and backpage are the smaller traffickers who force the victim to advertise directly on the internet – the victims can speak directly to how they were advertised.  With Google AdWords the victims are one level removed from the behemoth marketing machine of AdWords.  The internet is a blessing and a curse; blessing for the traffickers, but a curse for the victims." - Phil Cenedella 5-3-12   

Companies in Silicon Valley often do not think about human rights issues because they are focused intently on making products, said Bob Boorstin, director of public policy at Google. Others say they want to do the right thing and then fall short.  “You have to be willing to lose some money to protect human rights,” he said. “Not enough companies are ready for that.”

 

LA JOLLA HUMAN TRAFFICKING ACCORDS

* All peoples, regardless of race, religion, gender, age, nationality, or social group, have the right to live freely without fear of exploitation.

* Due to the increased demand for minor victims of labor and sexual exploitation, all children are entitled to society’s increased protection.

* Due to the fact that human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in our world today, this issue needs urgent attention and full collaboration among all service providers, law enforcement agencies, media outlets, community leaders, governmental agencies, and citizens.

* Legislation to enhance, and close loopholes, in the current laws against human trafficking need to reflect the severity of this heinous crime.

* Victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation should be given enhanced professional rehabilitation and healing for the traumatic consequences of their enslavement.

* Increased funding focused on programs that work should be the priority of all government organizations and private sector donors so as to effectively fight the demand for forced slave labor and commercialized sex and to help abolish slavery in our lifetime.

* Recognizing that modern slavery is no longer a hidden tragedy, priority needs to given to educating the public, law enforcement, transportation and service industries, the media, and social service providers on how to help stop it.

* All human traffickers and their clients (those that buy others for sex / those that force others to work in slave conditions) need to know society does not accept this behavior and we are increasing our efforts to stop this madness.
